Your Guide to Funding Your Education at Cavan Institute

Taking the next step in your education is exciting! But let's face it, the costs can add up quickly. Here at Cavan Institute, we understand that financial aid can be a confusing topic. That's why we've created this guide to help you navigate the different options available and unlock the financial support you deserve.

Grants: Your Ally in Affordability

Cavan Institute is proud to be an approved college for Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) maintenance grants. This means eligible students attending full-time courses at our institute can receive financial assistance to help cover living costs. These grants are a fantastic way to ease the financial burden of your education.

The Application Process: Partnering with SUSI

The application process for PLC maintenance grants goes through Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI). They handle all grant applications and determine eligibility based on your financial circumstances. To get a sense of your potential grant amount, you can use the SUSI Eligibility Reckoner on their website (https://www.cavaninstitute.ie/).

Additional Funding Opportunities Beyond Grants

While grants are a great starting point, there are other avenues to explore depending on your specific situation:

  • Medical Card Holders: If you hold a medical card, you may be exempt from the government PLC levy and Irish state examination fees. However, this exemption applies only to these specific fees and excludes fees from other examination bodies.

  • VTOS (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme): Are you over 21, receiving social welfare payments, and enrolled in a full-time program at Cavan Institute? You might be eligible for VTOS! This scheme provides financial support specifically for eligible adults returning to education.

  • Back to Education Allowance (BTEA): The BTEA allows qualified individuals to receive income support while participating in approved full-time courses. You can find more information on the BTEA through the Department of Social Protection website (https://services.mywelfare.ie/ or https://hea.ie/funding-governance-performance/funding/student-finance/).

Support for Students with Disabilities

Cavan Institute recognises the importance of inclusivity. The HEA Fund for Students with Disabilities provides funding specifically for support services tailored to students with disabilities. This can include things like assistive technology, learning support specialists, and adapted learning materials. If you have a disability, please reach out to Maureen Lynch, our Special Educational Needs Coordinator, to discuss potential support options available through this fund.

Remember, information is power! We encourage you to explore the resources provided above and don't hesitate to reach out to our friendly staff at Cavan Institute for further guidance. Together, we can make your educational journey a reality!
